Rooted in Santiago, shaped by time in Hong Kong and Miami, and now based in Amsterdam, Haumea surfaces with Red Spinel, a debut EP on Rhiza Semar that channels a life of movement into steady, unruly rhythm.
With a background that spans continents and cultures, Haumea’s craft distills that sense of motion into a sound that feels steady and sensory. Drawing inspiration from natural cycles, animation sound design, and mythic imagery, Haumea works like a sound cartographer of imaginary terrains.
This instinct for subtle storytelling finds a fitting home in Rhiza Semar, a label founded by Amsterdam-based DJ and producer Hitam. With past premieres already showcasing the label’s sonic DNA, this third release cements its vision: to unearth music that listens inward as much as it moves outward. Named after the Greek word ῥίζα, translating to ‘roots’, and Semar, the Javanese figure known for unsettling order through wit and unpredictability, the label sees rhythm as something untamed, something that grows sideways, splits, or loops back on itself.
Premiering today is the EP’s title track, Red Spinel, a low-lit burner that gradually unfolds its form. What begins as a hollow framework anchored by a wide and weighty kick is propelled by chant-like fragments and dust-coated detail. Around the halfway mark, an ambient progression pierces through, not to disrupt, but lending scale and sensitivity to the loop. It's a track that speaks in half-gestures, and somehow says a lot.
