On GEON, DE RIO’s co-founders Abo Abo and TOMO channel years of shared exploration into a nine-track split LP that sits right at the friction point between sound study and high-voltage catalysis.
Florence-based DE RIO, a collective, label, and party series, has steadily made waves across Europe’s club and DIY circuits. Now, its co-founders Abo Abo and TOMO present a far-reaching split LP on Brussels-based Alliance, a label and event series well known to Minimal Collective readers. A fitting cross-European link-up, collective to collective.
What sets Abo Abo and TOMO apart is their multi-disciplinary drive. Abo Abo, aka Daniele Carcassi, is a performer, composer, and sound artist whose work spans DJ sets, experimental performances, and sound installations. His recent piece for La Nature Festival, a towering totem of stacked speakers adorned with an ornamental pine structure, is a prime example of his spatial approach to sound. In tandem, TOMO (Tommaso Andorlini) complements the LP with tactile sound design and polyrhythmic mind trips, shaped by his work as a DJ, multi-instrumentalist, and bandleader. Together, they craft a borderless sound characterised by irresistible loops and granular abstractions.
Minimal Collective’s premiere pick, Diabase, opens the record with a plunge into wobbling sub-bass and scattered percussive fragments darting across the stereo field. The track instantly grips the listener with its spatial depth, each element flickers at a distance yet feels magnetically close. Zoom into its micro-variations, and the surfaces keep shifting, refracting from new angles. Just when a climax seems near, it swerves, holding you in suspense. Sleek percussion eventually locks the rhythm, but the tension never fully resolves. That’s what makes it so gripping.
