With a fascination for traditional Balinese rituals, Taipei-based INN thickens the transcendental coating on his latest EP, State of Flow, released on his imprint Zub Records.
INN seems to spend great - and very welcome - detail on the conceptual frameworks of his productions. On his earlier EP 乱Luan, several short films by director Akira Kurosawa were his starting point. The opening track, for example, revolved around the character of a Japanese officer, walking through a tunnel to meet his subordinates.
At the core of State of Flow lies another fascination of INN: the resonance of ritual. The Balinese ceremony Kecak Peliatan is derived from the traditional Sanghyang ritual, with the primary goal of warding off evil spirits. Though sampled from vinyl rather than field recordings, these voices carry an aura of spirituality that INN instinctively recognised as essential to his artistic identity. Throughout the record, they coexist with African percussion, Japanese taiko, and sharp drum patterns - each element reshaped and recontextualised. By fusing these fragments with techno and trance, INN builds a bridge between ancestral sound and contemporary dancefloors.
On our premiere track, Slipping Out, these ritual echoes emerge subtly around the one-minute-forty mark. It’s in these fleeting details, almost imperceptible at first, that the track finds its momentum, creating a looping, forward-driving energy with a trance-like pull.
