Hitam is back with the fourth entry of his quickly growing label, Rhiza Semar, the Yıldızlara EP. Centred on psychedelic techno and weathered sound design, the release draws its conceptual gravity from space, myth, and matter. Across four tracks, true to the Turkish title, ‘to the stars’, Hitam crafts a sound vessel built for cosmic transport.
For Minimal Collective readers, Hitam’s presence hardly needs an introduction. Over the past years, the Dutch artist has carved out a distinct identity, known for his powerful use of the 909 drum machine as well as more subdued production approaches. As founder of Rhiza Semar, he has shaped the imprint around three guiding pillars, geological, spiritual, and sonic, which also extend into his work as a DJ, his film effects, and his photography. The latter serves as an outlet and visual embodiment of these themes, capturing textures and landscapes that mirror the label’s sound world.
Launched just a year ago, Rhiza Semar has moved quickly, with two releases by Hitam and one by close friend and globetrotter Haumea. Together, they have shaped a sound that is both distinctive and consistent, now carried forward with Hitam’s third self-release, Yıldızlara. Described by the label as ‘shaped from shadow, rhythm, and elemental texture,’ the EP feels at once innovative and ancestral. A red line runs through Hitam’s practice, as he sees his productions as a way of reconnecting past and present.
Yıldızlara (‘to the stars’) captures this duality. Sonically, it leans into a futuristic and otherworldly palette of sounds, but its core is rooted in repetition and percussive structures that recall ritual practices passed down through time. The result is an EP that reaches forward into unknown spaces while carrying echoes of something deeply familiar.
The premiere track, Orb Weaver, makes this duality clear. The opener features IDM-inspired breaks that tighten and release like a web under strain. Originally produced for a fashion graduation show that explored the climb out of depression, the track carries a dark yet ceremonial energy, moving through downcast passages, moments of release, and ultimately catharsis.
