GEKO02

OK EG, the Melbourne duo of Lauren Squire and Matthew Wilson, counts ten years of two minds in sync. Delivering the second outing in their imprint GEKO’s catalogue, they mark a culmination of music and experiences born out of a studied understanding of sound. GEKO02 is precise in technicality but organically meant for dancefloor culture.

After meeting in a sound production course at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, Squire and Wilson first connected through a shared love of sound. Their early practices in electronic music moved between improvisation, audiovisual and performative experiments, coming from a more sound-oriented and exploratory practice. Despite this experimental foundation, underground dance culture had been part of their shared path from the start, gaining a more central position as they became increasingly affiliated with Melbourne’s electronic music scene. With releases on Animalia and Steeplejack, the duo increasingly reached dancefloors within Australia and beyond, bringing their close attention to sound and physical space into a club setting.

Never leaning too much into either dub, trance energy or techno-leaning characteristics, OK EG creates a world that is shaped by their live sets and physical surroundings. Their process is hybrid, with analogue machines feeding directly into digital workflows. Live performances are heavily entangled with field recordings from the environments in which they perform, and frequently become direct material for subsequent releases.

GEKO02 opens up dreamier and more abstract territory than GEKO01. Minimal Collective premieres Lily. It is light in feel but steady in movement. With a punctual rhythm carrying a breeze, the track makes a fitting tool for dancefloor moments in open-air.
