What They Left

With What They Left, Lyon-based artist Jonnnah delivers the third release on his label Second End Records. The 13-track album is arranged as two distinct sides, a sequence of interconnected pieces that trace an emotional shift. As a ‘document of transformation’, it sharpens his blend of atmospheric dub textures and trip-hop asymmetry.

Back in May this year, we premiered Me, With You on Glasgow’s co:clear label. Now, Jonnnah, the alias of Lyon-based producer Pierre Paumier returns with a new release on his home imprint, Second End Records. This addition fits into a broader run of work that has continued to shape the French producer’s position within dub- and trip-hop-infused ambient, forming a third chapter in the label’s catalogue after his own The Next Kingdom and the various-artists series COLLAGE.

What They Left, a 13-track album, moves beyond the classical A-B side format. A two-part conceptual framework illustrating the emotional tension between restlessness and moments of clarity. While each track charts its own path and carries shifting states of self-reflection, they intersect in ways that reinforce a subconscious, dreamlike state as a central thread within Jonnnah’s style.

Minimal Collective’s premiere track embodies this ongoing exploration of emotional movement. A decade is marked by a noticeable reduction in pace. Its steady rhythm functions almost like a measured internal pulse, while its techno-leaning structure maintains a drifting sense of tension. Rising layers of melancholic synths appear briefly before fading away again, forming a pattern that runs through the entire album; it lets you sink into its sound while still staying in tune with its changing details.
